Dutch Delegation to Learn from AVCT and Other Communities

A group of Dutch municipal officials, youth workers, police officers, and truancy officers from will be visiting Alt Valley as well as a number of other communities and organisations in Liverpool from 1-3 October.

The delegation from City District Amsterdam-West will compare new ways of working in and with communities and reflect on what it takes to do things differently in the context of welfare state reform and increasing pressures for innovation in local governance,

Dr Koen Bartels from the Business School at Bangor University will facilitate the group in comparing practices, experiences, and daily conditions with British colleagues and residents and seeing how real, sustainable difference to the lives of local people and areas can be made

Among the communities they will visit are Norris Green and Croxteth to learn from successes in building resilient communities, and reducing crime and anti –social behaviour. They will be looking at the success of working in partnership and will meet with local councillors, council officers authority and partner organisations including Alt Valley Community Trust, the Merseyside Youth Association and Merseyside Police.

Norris Green councillors Barry Kushner said: “Local councillors have been transforming  Norris Green and Croxteth over the past five years, attracting housing investment, building shops and community facilities, and building partnerships with local organisations to deliver an annual programme of youth and community provision. This is a model for the development of resilient and dynamic communities in achieving positive change that I am sure the Dutch delegation can learn from.”

Learner Voice Event

On Wednesday 20th May; AVCT hosted a ‘Learner Voice Event’ at the Communiversity. The event was a celebration to exhibit some of the work produced by our learners, and to enrol new learners on to the taster sessions.

Over 40 people were in attendance, and each were amazed at what could be achieved on our five week courses. It was reported 12 new learners enrolled on the night and a further 8 visited the Communiversity the following morning to enrol.

The night was really successful. It gave people the chance to sit and talk to tutors as well as past learners about the courses. The evening culminated with a performance by AVCT adult drama group. A great night was had by all!!!

If you could not attend on the night, don’t worry you can still enrol on one of the courses, simply pop into the Communiversity or give Sharon Ross a call on 0151 546 5514. Places are still available on the Tile Mosaic Class and the Creative Writing for Beginners.
