What a Summer at Lifestyles Croxteth Sports & Wellbeing Centre!

During the summer break, Lifestyles Croxteth Sports & Wellbeing Centre was packed out with young people from our local community and beyond! There was plenty on offer to keep everyone very entertained and motivated; as well as helping working families too.

Croxteth Sports Summer Play Scheme:  Coaches from our centre were on hand to provide fun to our young people during the six week break.  Plenty of sporting activities were available from table tennis, football, tag rugby as well as a mixed ‘Mini Metafit’ session…which proved very popular!

LFC Foundation hosted a 3 day football campMore than 50 children attended this camp.  Everyone enjoyed playing football for 5 hours a day, learning new skills…plus learning from some of the best coaches!

Merseyside & Cheshire Elite Boxing hosted a 4 day boxing camp:  The boxing camp was attended by 75 participants from clubs across the area and was headed by the England & Regional coach; John Warburton.  On the final day we had the pleasure of Mayor Joe Anderson visiting who was very impressed with all who was involved.  The Liverpool ECHO were on hand to capture this and produced an article about how well the camp went.  To read more click here

We also had another special guest; Undefeated WBA International Champion Tom Farrell; who popped in to give the boys and girls some words of encouragement! Thank you Tom…much appreciated!

Centre manager, Colly Whitty commented how proud she was to see so many young people during the half term break; as well as praise the partners / volunteers who made it successful  “What a pleasure to work in partnership with LFC Foundation and Merseyside & Cheshire Elite Boxing   as well as all the lovely people that came through the doors! I would like to personally thank all the volunteers in particular who gave up their valuable time to make the kids summer a good one!”

Croxteth Sports & Wellbeing AND Addaction – A Successful Partnership

The partnership between the G.P Referral Scheme, Croxteth Sports & Wellbeing Centre and Addaction is working out great. We have had a lot of people from Addaction who have been without substances for over three months; they have been signposted to the Sports Centre, some of their own accord but a lot get sent to the G.P to go on the G.P Referral Scheme.

We are extremely proud of the G.P Referral Scheme and the service Daryl the instructor provides .We have some really positive feedback from the service users. However;  there is one story that we want to share, as it is really heart felt and touching to see someone at rock bottom come out at the other end….

Terry aged 46 is a local guy who has lived around the area all his life. Over the years he had become a user of drugs; at the tender age of 27 he had become dependent on drugs and after years of abuse to his own body Terry decided he’d had enough; unfortunately this wasn’t early enough for his own health. Terry was now suffering with his health and was becoming increasing ill; he was diagnosed with C.O.P.D and emphysema.

With the help of the G.P referral scheme, Addaction and Croxteth Sports Centre Terry turned his life around and was looking at ways to improve his health. He has now been clean for over 8 months and is moving from strength to strength. Croxteth Sports Centre work with Addaction to provide a service for its users; anyone who has been clean for 3 months can come along to the centre and pay £1 per session. Once Terry’s G.P referral scheme finished Addaction sent him to the centre and now Terry is a regular in the gym and is moving forward with increasing level of self-esteem and social skills, and has become a valued member of Croxteth Sports and Wellbeing.

Terry has also become a recovery champ for Addaction; he has done a number of presentations not just to his peers but to a room full of Professionals to not only tell them all about his journey but to show Addaction how they can further improve the service they offer.

Tammy Burgess, Sports & Health Wellbeing manager explains;  “The most warming and heart felt thing for us is it gives other people and Mums and Dads hope that people can make changes to their lifestyle”
