"I am a student studying away from home, because of local lockdown restrictions I haven't been able to see any of my family since last year and I can't meet with anyone outside my household. As much as I love my housemates, seeing the same 5 people for months can be tiring and rather isolating at times so I am glad I joined the course. Through this I have been able to meet new people and practice my cooking skills. There is a real community feel to the group, everybody is welcoming and easy to get along with. Participating in this course has broken up my routine and I now have something to look forward to each week other than my lectures.

"I think that the course is great for anybody wishing to improve their cooking skills or even just practice! The course is incredibly accessible as it's all online and we even have a groupchat to put all the recipes in. Sharon and Pauline really do appreciate students' input on the course, for example what we would like to bake or try. The course is perfect for me as I wanted to improve my baking and maths skills. Maths was never my strongpoint at school so having a chance to practice whilst doing something I enjoy has been great. So far we haven't baked anything I have done before so it has been a challenge but I've really enjoyed it. Now I know how to make things like scones, banana bread and shortbread, which I had never tried before. So the course is helping me to try out new things whilst improving skills I already had, I am really enjoying it."

"I have problems with my stomach which means I can't have certain foods such as those with lactose or caffeine in them, or foods that take a while to digest. Pauline has been incredibly helpful as each week she highlights foods that I'll need replacements for (such as butter or eggs). She has also helped me to find some good replacements I hadn't tried before so I was still able to join in the classes each week."

Classic Bakes and Novel Cakes

Hi Pauline,

I just wanted to send a bit of positive feedback on the course so far.

Given that I've been furloughed, this course has done wonders to help restructure my days and week a lot since starting, which in turn has helped me keep productive and keep my mental well-being in check.

It's been really helpful for me to quickly improve my cooking skills, not just from your own lessons but with other members of the group adding their own takes and tips on recipes we've already touched on.

Thanks again for delivering these sessions and all your support in the Zoom classes and WhatsApp!

Driving Theory

Taken from one to one discussion with Learner

Learner was unemployed and felt that learning to drive would improve her employment opportunities, but due to financial barriers she was reluctant to book her theory test, by completing the course her test was booked and paid for by AVCT and she passed her test in May.

L had low confidence starting the course, but progressed well.

She contacted her tutor to inform her that she has also recently gained employment with the NHS as a ward assistant, She feels that attending the course helped improve her confidence and communication skills which helped in interviews, and feels that once she is driving her career opportunities will improve.
